Ferreries, Menorca

Ferreries district, running from north to south across the centre of the island, occupies some of the hilliest terrain on Menorca, with impressive gorges winding down to the south coast amid fertile farmland.
The town of Ferreries, whose name is thought to have originated in the blacksmith’s (ferrer) trade, lies in the centre of the district. Once reliant solely on farming, today the footwear, jewellery and furniture-making industries represent important sources of income.

The small town of Ferreries has grown significantly in recent years, although the main square remains the centre of activity with a colourful farmers market held on Saturdays. The old part of the town, which is very picturesque with narrow cobbled streets and houses painted in different colours, fans out around the square and is pleasant to wander around.

.Hort Sant Patrici is a farm located in the middle of the island. They produce Menorcan cheese, wine “Illa de menorca”, extra virgin olive oil and they also run a cosy and modern rural hotel for couples. The farm is open for visitors to see how they make cheese, visit the winery, and the cheese museum or stroll around their fantastic garden full of sculptures and surrounded by the vineyards of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. You must visit their shop “Comer’d’Or” where, besides tasting and buying their cheeses and wines you will find the best selection of products from Menorca: sobrasada, carnixulla, gin, ensaimada, herbs liquors, oils, salts, pastissets, etc.

One of the most picturesque bays in Menorca, almost encircled by cliffs, with pine trees growing right on the beach, Cala Galdana is a major resort on the south coast. Picnic tables are available under the trees and there are several beach bars to choose from. A well planned development with several high end hotels and numerous villas. Most of the services are located across the bridge on the western side of the estuary. The resort has numerous bars, restaurants, supermarkets, a medical centre and pharmacy, dive centre and crazy golf.  In the restaurant El Mirador you can take in the best views of Cala Galdana and at the same time enjoy their specialities such as paella, lobster caldereta and fresh fish. Perfect to contemplate the sunset.

Accessed on foot from Cala Galdana or via a dirt track by car, the two beaches in this bay are in total contrast to Galdana, being totally virgin, picture perfect coves of the clearest water and finest sand. A picnic area has been set up at the rear and a footpath leads eastwards from here to more undeveloped beaches. Remember to take all your rubbish away with you as there is no rubbish collection service here.
