Es Mercadal

Es Mercadal

Es Mercadal, Menorca

Es Mercadal sits squarely at the centre of the island in the shadow of Monte Toro, the island’s highest peak (a lofty 358 metres). Es Mercadal is famed for having a number of excellent restaurants serving authentic Menorcan food and also for the delicious pastries made here. Don’t leave without trying the pastissets (similar to shortbread) or the amargos (almond macaroons).

The central part of the north coast also falls under Es Mercadal’s control. This stretch of coast is rugged and windswept and there are several undeveloped beaches to explore. The north coast is markedly different from the south coast in appearance with dark reddish brown rocks and cliffs, low-lying shrubby vegetation and ochre coloured sand.

Na Macaret is a charming little village, with a small beach at its centre, across the bay from Addaia. Although Addaia has no beach, its position, built around two narrow inlets, is picturesque. There is a small marina at the end of one inlet and plenty of space for safe anchoring. The sheltered inlets are ideal for exploring by kayak.

This is the ideal location for learning and practicing windsurfing and sailing. It also offers a dive centre, catamaran trips, boat trips, bike and kayak rentals. A number of good restaurants famed for their caldereta de langosta. The separate development of Ses Salines has a small beach from which windsurfers and dinghies are launched.

It is situated beside Playa Arenal de Son Saura du Nord. Here is Menorca’s only 18-hole golf club. All of the village’s apartments, villas and hotels enjoy views of either the beautiful beach, lovely golf course, surrounding woods or a combination of all of them!  The village has a medical centre, pharmacy, restaurants, cafés, bars and shops.

A perfect horseshoe-shaped bay with a narrow entrance, an arc of golden sand and excellent swimming conditions. There is full range of entertainment options. Tennis club, shopping centre, cocktail and sports bars, restaurants, boutiques and mini-train. The Ses Coves Noves development is located slightly inland and has a tennis club, commercial centre and members club.

The scenery at Cavallería is particularly dramatic with the red clay cliffs and a long stretch of dark yellow sand. On the other side of the headland is the resort of Playas de Fornells. With good restaurants and a bar specializing in cocktails. The resort commands spectacular views over Tirant Bay and the beach, backed by sand dunes and clear, shallow water.Son Xoriguer, the largest beach close to Ciutadella, is ideal for watersports. The white sand beach shelves gently and has a lifeguard post, wheelchair access, parking, toilets and showers.

The main beach is flanked on one side by three small beaches. On the other side, a 20 minute walk along the path is the only land access to Pregonda, one of the most photographed  beaches on Menorca with its distinctive white house right on the sand.
